I paint to capture the spirit of the land that makes this country my home through thick layers of gestural paint. The majority of my work is an outlet of abstract expressionism. The work presents the joy and beauty of the subject matter. My process starts intellectually, outlining the scene in a sketch, setting up a vision of the final painting and planning how to commence and complete the painting. Then I work with large brushes and palette knives to block in the key elements of the landscape. Using larger tools for painting keeps the focus on the broad concepts and avoids details that would distract from the overall intent of the work.
The purpose of my work is to present the feel of the landscape, – from the presence of the sun moving across the landscape, or the breeze on the shoreline and in the trees to the joy and peace found in being at such a location. The power behind my work is my ability to be still and patiently observe as I listen for and watch to see the divine presence reveal itself through His creation.
The USA flag series serves as a reminder of the greatness of the USA and its origin. Their bold colors and rugged look remind me of the mighty struggles the nation has been through, and that it still stands.
I primarily use oils, palette knives and large canvases.
I participate in Plein Air contests around the country and received Third place in "Plein Air Daily" Booth Bay Harbor, ME in 2017; Third place in Town & Country, MO in 2016; Best of Show in the “Farmer’s Market Quick Draw,” Booth Bay Harbor, ME in 2015 and Second Place in Moab, UT in 2015; Best of Show in Town & Country, MO in 2011.
I reside in St. Louis, MO, painting the beauty of the Midwest.
“All manifestations of art are but landmarks in the progress of the human spirit toward a thing but as yet sensed and far from being possessed.” – Robert Henri
